Privacy policy

The short version

The typing test runs entirely in your browser. The words you type, your speed, your accuracy and your history are processed on your own device and stored in your own browser. We do not receive them, we cannot read them, and there is no account to attach them to.

We do not sell personal information. We do not ask you to register. The only third parties involved are the advertising and analytics services described below, and you can see exactly which of those are switched on at any time by looking at what the page loads.

What we store on your device

Type Your Way writes a small amount of data to your browser's local storage. None of it is transmitted anywhere.

• Your test history. Each completed test saves a record containing your net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, consistency, test length, mode and a timestamp. This is what powers the streaks, personal bests and the chart on the home page. It is capped at your most recent 1,000 results.
• Your theme choice. Whether you picked light or dark, so the site does not forget on reload.
• Whether you collapsed the advert bar. Kept for the current browsing session only and cleared when you close the tab.

You can remove all of it at any time. Use the "Clear history" button in the progress section, or clear site data through your browser settings. Once removed it is gone, because there is no copy anywhere else.

What we do not collect

• No name, email address, phone number or postal address, unless you choose to email us.
• No account, because there are no accounts.
• No payment details, because nothing on the site is for sale.
• The text you type is never transmitted to a server.
• Any name you enter on a certificate is used to draw that certificate in your browser and is not saved or sent anywhere.

Advertising

Advertising is not currently running on this site, so no advertising cookies are being set and no advertising scripts are loaded. The pages you see may show empty placeholder boxes where adverts will eventually sit.

When advertising does go live it will be served through Google AdSense. At that point Google and its partners will act as third-party vendors and may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. You will be able to opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies at aboutads.info. This page will be updated on the day that changes, and where the law requires it you will be asked for consent first.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages people actually read. It records things like page views, approximate location derived from a truncated IP address, device type and referring site. IP anonymisation is switched on. We use it to decide what to build next, not to identify anybody. Google's practices are covered in the Google Privacy Policy.

Hosting and server logs

The site is served as static files from a commercial hosting provider. Like nearly every web server, the host keeps short-lived access logs that can include IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp. These exist for security and reliability, are handled by the host under its own terms, and are not combined with anything else by us.

Children

Type Your Way is a general audience website and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the test requires no registration and collects no personal details, there is very little to collect in the first place.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict processing of personal data about you, and to object to it. Because we hold no account data and store your results only in your own browser, most of these rights are exercised directly by clearing your browser storage. If you have emailed us and want that correspondence deleted, ask and we will delete it.

Residents of California may request that we disclose or delete personal information collected about them. Residents of the EU and UK may lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Material changes, such as turning on a new advertising or analytics partner, will be reflected here before or at the time they take effect.
